Fleas and ticks prevention in dogs and cats

How do you choose a suitable flea and drawing agent for your pet?

Owners of dogs, cats and also rabbits know that these pets can suffer from fleas and ticks. If your pet suffers from fleas, this is very annoying for your pet but also for yourself. Nobody is waiting for a plague of fleas in their house. There is often an increase in fleas in the spring and when it gets nice and warm at home because of the stove or sun. Avoid that your pet gets complaints from fleas, these complaints vary from mild itching to mega itching when there is a flea dermatitis in your pet due to a flea allergy.

Besides fleas we also see more and more ticks in our country. These can cause annoying diseases when the tick sits on your pet for more than 24 to 48 hours. That is why we recommend that you actively protect your dog or cat from these diseases at least from February to November. When the weather gets very cold during the nights, the number of ticks decreases again. This is why it is not entirely predictable until when it is best to keep protecting your dogs and cats. More and more often, therefore, protection against ticks is chosen throughout the year.

Can you protect a dog and cat against fleas and ticks using the same means?

Dogs and cats do not all tolerate the same active substances. For example, a cat absolutely cannot tolerate a flea and ticking agent based on Permetrin. This is poisonous for cats, but dogs tolerate it very well. So it is not the case that you can adopt products intended for dogs one on one for cats. So always choose a flea pesticide or drawing agent that is registered for the desired species.

Trawing tape, flea tape, pipettes in the neck, flea spray or tablets?

There are many different products on the market that can protect your dog or cat against fleas and ticks. One product only works for two to four weeks against ticks, while the other is effective for up to 8 months. One you enter as a worming tablet the other is a band that you always see, or you use a pipette but these are often a little shorter effective.

How do you decide which one suits you and your pet best?

First of all, it is useful to see exactly what you want to protect against. A cat that only lives inside doesn't need to be protected against ticks, but you do need to protect it against fleas. If you have a dog or cat that walks through bushes and high grass, it is useful to protect against ticks for a longer period of time per year. If your dog or cat is sensitive to the active ingredient in the flea-drawing agents, it can sometimes be more convenient to choose a tablet and so everyone makes their own decision. But it is a good idea to protect all pets (simultaneously) against fleas and ticks because ticks can not only transmit irritation but also a disease and fleas can transmit tapeworms.

Choosing a flea agent for your dog and cat, what do you pay attention to?

This starts with deciding what you want, just fleas or even ticks? After that the choice is; do you want to administer a remedy every month or do you want to protect yourself longer with a Seresto collar, for example, so that the chance of forgetting it is much smaller. When you choose for a longer lasting effective remedy, the first purchase will sometimes be a bit more expensive, but in the longer term it will often be cheaper. Note that many flea-spot-on products have the same active ingredient, but the price can differ a lot. In addition, with a flea pipette based on Fipronil the addition combo is really different than the version without combo. When choosing between a pipette, drawing tape or spray, it is also important to look at the age and weight of your pet. Not everything is suitable for puppies or kittens, or pregnant animals.
